1840 Recently, for the first time came across a remarkable letter of its kind, originating from Bosnia and transiting through Austria, to be returned across the border to Serbia. Written by a private person in Bosnia Dubica on December 29, 1840 ( Julian Calendar ), a very small town on the right bank of the Una river, northwest Bosnia, on Ottoman territory (Bosnian Dubica got for the first time a post office in 1883, during the Austrian administration ) it was carried across the river to Croatian Dubica ( on Austrian territory ) and first of all purified in the "Dubitzer Filial Rastell" on 23 January 1841 ( Gregorian Calendar ) and "cleaned on the iniside and outside. "The purification is confirmed on the reverse in manuscript. The letter was then transferred to the Dubitza post office and posted to Mitrovitza an important Austrian border town on the Sava river. The cachet on top of the front is "DUBICZA / ILLYRIE", introduced in 1811 Napoleon,s rule, its use being continued after the reestablishment of Austrian rule. The rate 28 marked in black ink, is the internal Austrian rate for letters of the second weight scale. It was addressed to a middleman in Mitrovittza, Stevan Radovanovic, and readdressed to Shabatz, a Serbain town on the south bank of the Sava, (a post office was opened in
1840), its final destination. From Mitrovitz the letter was tranported to the border point KLENAK, opposite Shabatz, given to the captain of the Serbian ferry, a tax of 2 kreuzer was paid as marked by red crayon on the revers, and tetter was then delivered in Shabatz to Nikola Ninich. It would be a gem in any colletion of postal history of Serbia, Bosnia, the Military border, or Austrian prephilately, as well as in any collection of worldwide disinfected mail.
